India’s EV story keeps setting records. June 2026 retail sales hit an all-time high of 3,06,220 units, up 63% year-on-year, pushing overall EV penetration past 12% for the first time. Passenger EV penetration alone rose from 4.8% (June 2025) to 7.7% (June 2026). Over the trailing 12 months (Jul 2025–Jun 2026), India logged 28.27 lakh EV sales, per Vahan data.
Charging infrastructure is scaling too — just not as fast. Public charging stations nearly doubled from 29,151 (Dec 2025) to 52,718 by July 21, 2026, per government data tabled in Parliament, including 16,561 fast chargers for cars. The Centre has earmarked ₹912.5 crore under FAME-II and ₹2,000 crore under PM E-DRIVE specifically for charging build-out.
Do the math anyway: 28.27 lakh EVs sold in a year against 52,718 charging points works out to roughly one charger for every 54 EVs sold in that period alone — before counting the EV stock already on the road from earlier years.
Infrastructure isn’t stagnant, as the doubling shows. It’s a race where demand keeps out-accelerating supply. For founders, the opening isn’t in vehicles — it’s in charger uptime, siting, and financing models that don’t wait for the next scheme. For policymakers: track chargers-per-EV-sold, not just station counts.
